Job Description

OYY Lubavitch Boys School is seeking a committed, knowledgeable, and flexible SENCO to coordinate and oversee SEND provision across our small, close-knit Orthodox Jewish boys' school (ages 5–15). Working primarily remotely, the SENCO will play a crucial role in identifying, planning, delivering, and monitoring support for pupils with additional needs, ensuring that every child can access their learning and flourish within our combined Kodesh (Jewish Studies) and Chol (General Studies) curriculum.

The SENCO will work closely with teaching staff, parents, external agencies, and the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to maintain a strong, compliant SEND structure, with a professional, collaborative approach that supports the existing leadership and teaching framework.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct initial assessments following referrals from class teachers, identifying specific learning or behavioural needs.
  • Develop and write tailored support plans including School Action Plans, Individual Education Plans (IEPs), and Individual Behaviour Plans (IBPs) for teachers to follow and implement.
  • Arrange appropriate special support and resources for pupils where additional interventions are required.
  • Monitor and review IEPs and IBPs regularly, ensuring goals are met and that interventions remain effective.
  • Recruit, allocate, and oversee support teachers and assistants delivering interventions, ensuring quality and consistency.
  • Collaborate with class teachers to embed SEND strategies into daily teaching practice and to share advice, strategies, and solutions.
  • Work supportively with parents and carers to meet children’s needs, fostering open and productive communication.
  • Liaise closely with the Headteacher and SLT to provide strategic oversight and to report on SEND provision and progress.
  • Liaise with the Local Authority and external agencies regarding School Action Plus interventions and referrals.
  • Maintain detailed and confidential records of meetings, assessments, observations, and correspondence in line with GDPR and data protection laws.
  • Ensure that SEND systems, policies, and practices are fully compliant with the latest legislation and safeguarding expectations.
  • Make referrals to medical and specialist services when additional expertise is required.
  • Engage regularly with city-wide services, health, and educational professionals to access specialist support for pupils.
  • Maintain and update the school’s SEN Register, ensuring accurate tracking of pupils with SEND.
  • Collate, submit, and manage Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), coordinating meetings and annual reviews.
  • Coordinate the assessment, submission, and implementation of JCQ Access Arrangements and Special Considerations for examinations.
  • Administer whole-school reading assessments annually to support early identification of literacy support needs.
  • Track pupils’ academic marks and progress to identify emerging SEND needs early.
  • Contribute to the safeguarding culture of the school and support the pastoral development of pupils with SEND.

Experience and skills Required

Experience:

  • Extensive experience working as a SENCO or similar SEND leadership role within a school setting (formal NASENCO qualification advantageous but not essential).
  • Experience supporting both academic and behavioural needs across a wide age range (5–15).

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Sound knowledge of SEND legislation and best practice, including EHCPs and School Action Plus procedures.
  • Familiarity with JCQ Access Arrangements processes.
  • Strong IT and data management skills; able to work confidently with spreadsheets, SEND tracking systems, and reports.
